'SMOKE & MIRRORS' BY THE WILD & FREE (SINGLE REVIEW)

The Wild & Free have given the summer one final spin with their latest single, 'Smoke & Mirrors', a flourishing track that emanates a fizzing heat. The release was quickly followed by a saturated music video that follows the quintessential summer pool party; a mix of bikinis, inflatables, sunglasses, and drama, in all their glory.

It's rare to find a music video that binds a clear aesthetic, a glossy performance, and a humourous storyline together as seamlessly as is shown in 'Smoke & Mirrors'. Vocalist, Rachel Greco, bounds about, surrounded by boisterous band members, Mike Henthorn (Guitar), Dan Kerns (Guitar), Zach Shaw (Bass) and Marc Lyle (Drums), occupying the performance segments of the video. Usually, these elements are able to fall flat as there is only so much energy a band can emit while performing in the confines of a camera shot, but frontwoman Rachel's intense mobility and accentuated facial expressions keep the video fresh and somewhat enchanting. And honestly, when the track scuttled to a stop because Rachel had to move her car right as the video's narrative was escalating, I laughed. Kinda loud.

Heavily influenced by the likes of All Time Low and The All-American Rejects, The Wild & Free's discography is punchy and continuously blushed with contagious energy. Their prior releases, such as single, 'Paper Cut' and earlier EP, 'The Sugar High' embody a similar vibe, touching on deeply rooted subjects despite their tropical delivery. The Wild & Free's aura is endearing; the layered nature of each track proves the quintet to be more complex than most pop-punk bands. 'The song is an upbeat, summertime jam with a catchy melody. But don't let that fool you - the lyrics are actually some of the deepest and most vulnerable we've written, and it actually was going to be a slow song but we found it too depressing,' the band laughs. It is refreshing to discover a band that combines intricate issues with such staggeringly upbeat music, and because of this, I feel that this track drenches the scene in rejuvenating vibes. Catchy, developmental and the perfect festival hype track - what more could you ask for?

The music video that stands alongside 'Smoke & Mirrors' demonstrates the perfect setting for you to bumble about to this song, cocktail in hand, cares floating away in the humidity. Revel in the bursting danceability of this single before the summer dwindles, but maybe take a second, put down the cocktail momentarily, and lean fully into the track's lyricism - you might just develop a deeper understanding of this animated band. They're going places.
