INTRODUCING GOOD BOY DAISY: THE DYNAMIC POST-GRUNGE ROCK BAND FROM ARIZONA

A band can't have it all, right? Glowing aesthetics, stellar vocals, kicker instrumentation, and polished production are often variables from which a band has to choose one or two from, right? The same enriching vibe continual between recorded tracks and live presence is a myth, right? Right!? I thought so, at least, until I tripped over the radiant quartet, Good Boy Daisy.

Following their formation by Hallie and Dylinn Mayes in Arizona back in 2015, Good Boy Daisy have dug their heels into the gritty soil of the alternative music scene and kicked their feet relentlessly, shaking up the community so ravenously that we have no choice but to listen. Comprised of Hallie and Dylinn Mayes, Molly Mashal and Logan Dolezal, the Arizona-native rock band has been catapulted rapidly into the public eye as a result of their tireless work and features in events such as Zombie Walk, Viva Phoenix and the Bike Night Concert Series at the Harley Davidson Museum. Good Boy Daisy's fervour is continuous - their latest single release, 'Stop This Fight' is bouncy, catapulting the listener into a room full of glossy red balloons and encouraging them to bound about as chaotically as they please. There is a deviation in Hallie's vocals; she toys with the conventions of melodic expectation and twists them slightly to give Good Boy Daisy's tracks an endearingly unorthodox tone - vocals ripple simultaneously to that of the guitar's reverb and they merge to create a rich medley of punk, torn into existence with a haywire drive.

The band ensures that the relationship between themselves and their audience is one of the tightest and most prioritised bonds in their careers. Alongside using their YouTube platform to post music videos and enthralling recordings of their live shows, Good Boy Daisy sucks their audience right into the millennial pinnacle of entertainment by uploading online challenges. The contrast between such fan-decided challenges like the 'Not My Arms Challenge' and their more serious uploads, like 'The Cranberries - Zombie - Tribute to Dolores O'Riordan' exemplifies the flexibilities of Good Boy Daisy. It is evident that not only are they exceptional musicians that don't have an aversion to realism and emotion, but they are also an animated band with the audacity to bare their genuine personalities, with the intention of connecting with their audience on a level that not many bands do.

The post-grunge quartet re-entered the studio in March of this year following the undeniable success of their debut EP, 'It's About Time', with the intention of continuing the trail they had blazed by creating even punchier releases. Recent singles, 'Amen' and 'Stop This Fight' are reminiscent of the 'raw, guitar-driven, and high-energy' nature of their previous tracks - Good Boy Daisy have found their style and have hit the ground running. I spoke to Molly, one of two guitarists in the band, because the polarisation between Good Boy Daisy's musical determination and casual demeanour interested me. I wanted to understand them on a professional level while allowing their juvenile undertones to roam freely...

- INTERVIEW CONDUCTED WITH MOLLY MASHAL -

How would you describe your music? What separates you from other bands in the alternative scene?
We would describe our sound as raw, guitar-driven, and high-energy. Our live instrumentation and three-part harmonies separate us from the rest of the bands in our scene.

Can you tell me a bit about your writing process as a band?
Songs usually stem from a melody or guitar riff. One person will bring something to the table, whether it's a whole song or a small part, and once two or three sections are laid out, we jam it out together in practice.

If you could get any of your own lyrics tattooed, what would they be and why?
The band would get matching butt tatts, saying 'Bite down on this apple', a line from our new single, 'Stop This Fight'. (Don't worry, our inspiration for this song was actually Snow White).

If you were to summarise or describe Good Boy Daisy - music, aesthetic and all - on an album cover, what images would you include and why?
If we were to describe GBD in one image, here's what it would look like: Us lounging in a lazy river full of coffee, on bagel-shaped rafts, using our 'ugly sticks' as oars, eating a 'Moons Over My Hammy' sandwich from Denny's.

Explained - a pot of coffee because we live on caffeine. Bagels because they gave us an unlimited supply of bagels while we were recording our first EP in New York. The Denny's logo because we always go there after gigs (it's the only place open - we order Moons Over My Hammy. Our two ugly sticks).

What have been some of Good Boy Daisy's biggest achievements?
We had the opportunity to play Summerfest two years in a row, which has been such a fun experience. Last year, we wrote the new jingle for Mac Tools, giving us a chance to be extra creative and challenge our writing. We are also so lucky to be sponsored by Fender, QSC, Sennheiser, Ultimate Ears, Kemper, and SKB.

What message are you trying to convey to your audience through your music?
In our live shows, our mission is to create a vibe where anyone from anywhere can have a good time and leave any prejudices or concerns behind. It's all about the music.

What has been your most memorable moment on stage so far?
Most memorable moment on stage? The first time our fans started singing along to our originals. That was the best feeling ever.

Describe each member of Good Boy Daisy in one word.
Hallie would be 'bubbles', Dylinn would be 'blunt', Molly would be 'spicy' and Logan would be 'biceps'.

If you could tour with three of your greatest influences, who would they be?
If we could tour with three of our greatest influences, we would choose Paramore, Nothing But Thieves, and Foo Fighters.

What are the future plans for Good Boy Daisy? Anything exciting coming up?
We are in the process of writing new music to get out to you guys! Looking to modernise our current style and come up with some new jams.
