REVIEW: 'CIRCLE PIT // BAD SEED' BY WARGASM

Wargasm's sucker-punch of a new release, 'Circle Pit // Bad Seed', cuts so deep you could warm your hands on the fire coming from its guts. There's something mature about it, primal in its intention. Rather than gnashing its way through a choppy runtime without so much as a breath, our newest offering sets the precedent for the band's upcoming intimate run of shows stunningly.

Every inch of 'Circle Pit' at its surface is delicious. Punctuated by riffs that crunch and vocals grittier than a gravel salad, it delivers a blow sonically that is signature to Wargasm, but there's also a depth to the track that heightens it beyond expectation. It salivates existentialism, a howling call to the void able to articulate what most cannot: everything might be against us, but what's important is that there is an us. In spite of its prickly exterior, 'Circle Pit' is alive with a comfort of the deepest human level. It will thrive in smaller venues. It's a stunner.

What once sizzled in the back of the throat of 'Circle Pit' becomes a full-blown exorcism in 'Bad Seed'. Drenched in antagonism, this track propels from its brother's more nuanced back, wild-eyed and scathing. It swells and froths between Matlock and Way's vocals in equal measures, cinematic in its delivery as they bounce from one another to create a sprawling, saturated sensory landscape.

Wargasm released two singles, but do not mistake a small stature for lack of character. More than anything the duo have made clear that while they have a penchant for ritual chaos, there is always substance beneath the sound that deserves enthusiastic appreciation.
