INTRODUCING LAZYBONES: DIZZYING GARAGE-ROCK FROM BRIGHTON, ENGLAND

I don't think I've ever tripped over a band so multi-dimensional in my life before. Lazybones seem to have the seamless ability to mesh their overt passion for crafting loveable, professional music with their innate carelessness for the negative opinions of others. Their productions ensue with a sleek but rugged feel, as the garage-rock roots of this band fail to be diminished under the swimmable confidence of their tracks.

The fuzzy Brighton based trio shudder at the thought of bands taking themselves too seriously. Granted, Lazybones pour their hearts, souls, and yellow jumpsuits into their music, but they just radiate unreserved joy. Bundles of angered energy, they are.

Consisting of Candi Underwood (vocals and Hammond organ), John Tighe (bass), and Sam Barnes (drums), this British outfit has a fair few bops under their belt. From the release of their single, 'Zombie' in 2017 to the 'Bang! Bang!' EP released earlier this year, Lazybones have been cementing quite the name for themselves. Fear not, however. It does not end there.

Lazybones announced that they would be dropping a new single, 'Trash Talk' in early October, and boy, did they drop that bombshell on us. 'Trash Talk' is vicious, punchy, venomous, and everything in between. The writing process seemed pretty radical too, as depicted in the recap video posted on social media by the band (you can have a watch here).

The trio are also in the gearing up for an imminent UK tour, aptly titled 'Trash Talk Tour'. It's birth in Nottingham later this month is likely to ignite a fire so ferocious that it will smoulder until the tour's conclusion in Milton Keynes in early November. You'd be a fool to miss a date, honestly.

'Trash Talk' relishes in the bubbling anticipations and frustrations of biting your tongue when every inch of your being screams at you not to. The intoxication I found myself paddling in upon my first listen possessed me to talk to this band. I mean, how could I not?

INTERVIEW CONDUCTED WITH LAZYBONES

Regarding your new single, 'Trash Talk', which lyric did you write first? Did the song stem from a concept you were already thinking of, or did you think of a catchy line and work from there?
We'd played with the idea of 'Trash Talk' as a phrase before but with different concepts, but nothing really worked. I loved the phrase as a lyric so we kept it in our minds, and when I first heard the verse riff musically, it felt like something was coming and bubbling under the surface. I knew then that I wanted to write a song about that moment in an argument when you know you shouldn't say something but you just can't stop it, and topping it off with 'Trash Talk' seemed like the perfect summary for that.

What's your favourite thing about jamming the new song live?
That scream going into the instrumental section is my favourite by far. It's a real peak musically, but also a part where we can just rock out altogether as a band and have some fun.

What kind of reception has 'Trash Talk' received so far? Any memorable comments?
It's had a brilliant response so far in the few days it's been out. We've all felt it's a step up for us, so hearing people use words like 'explosive' and 'ferocious' has been awesome. We've also had plays on Radio X and BBC Introducing, who have been really supportive of us throughout the whole time we've been together so it all feels really positive.

You've been given free rein to design your own Dr. Marten boots. How would you decorate them in a way that best describes this period of Lazybones?
If we're going full Lazybones I'd say we'd have some skeleton heads on there, maybe thrown in our 'Trash Talk' monster bin. There'd also be some yellow laces just to make them a little more fun and colourful.

We have all our artwork done by our friend ILLWOOKIE (@illwookie on IG) who's incredible, so no doubt he'd make them awesome.

Simmer down your aesthetic for the 'Trash Talk' era to three items or concepts that would best encapsulate what this time stands for to you. What would you choose and why?
1. Bins - We really went literal with our concept here for trash but what's scarier than an angry bin?! We like to have a little fun with our artwork and this one is no different.

2. Yellow - Before our previous EP, we decided we wanted to take fashion out of the band and for people not to be able to know what we sound like by our look. We also knew we wanted to show the playful side of the band and our music so we all wear yellow all the time.

3. A bit shit but alright - One thing about the band is we are essentially DIY and we love creating things together. That said, we're not millionaires, so when it comes to things like music videos, we just work with what we have. It does mean that things sometimes look a bit shit but it forces us to be more creative and come up with better ideas because of it. We're not afraid of looking uncool or of things not being perfect - it's what makes things more entertaining, for sure.

Aside from the Trash Talk Tour, are there any other upcoming plans for Lazybones? What kind of thing should we be looking out for?
Well, there might be a cheeky 'Trash Talk' video coming your way soon, but after the tour, we'll be getting our heads back down to writing and plans for 2020. We've got some good things in the bag so you'll just have to wait and see!
